Clickcornertoturn3NorfolkCountyCouncilNorfolkCountyCouncilhasbeendelightedtosupportandhelpshapethisproject.AstheLocalEducationAuthorityithasaresponsibilityforencouragingandsupportingyoungpeopletotakeuplearningforeignlanguages.HowevertheCountyCouncilalsoappreciatestheeconomicvalueofforeignlanguagedevelopment.Themostsuccessfullocaleconomiescontainlargenumbersofbusinessesactivelyexportingandorcollaboratingoverseas.Whilstitisofcoursenotvitalnorpossibletobefluentineverylanguagethemoreabusinesscanassimilateitselfintothecultureandlanguageofanoverseascompanythebetteritschancesofsuccess.Byappendingoneormorelanguageskillstoatechnicalscientificfinancialorotherbusinessskillitcanleadtoawinningcombination.Moreoverayoungpersonenteringtheworkplacefreshlyarmedwithlanguageskillscanquicklybecomeanimportantassettoabusinessandsharpenitsfocusondevelopingoverseasrelationships.TheprojecthasIbelievesignificantlyenhancedthelearningexperiencesoftheyoungpeoplewhoparticipated.Thereallifeprojectsthatweredevelopedwiththebusinesspartnershavereallyhelptocontextualiselanguagesandprovidesomevaluableexperiences.Ithasalsoenhancedthecurriculumitselfenablingyoungpeopletohavethepotentialofachievinghighergrades.Theschoolsthathaveparticipatedloveitandwanttodomore.Theybelievethepracticalaspectsoftheschemehelpmakelanguagesmoreattractivetofutureintakes.Wethinkitalsohelpsyoungpeopletoappreciatethevalueoftheskillstheyhave.Theywillbemorelikelytooffertheirlanguageskillstoanemployeriftheopportunityarises-ratherthanlettingtheirskillsgrowrusty.NotreDameAsaSpecialistLanguageCollegeNotreDameHighSchoolwasdelightedtoparticipateinthisBusinessLanguagesChampionsprojectwhichwefeelwasofverygreatbenefittoourstudents.SixthFormlanguagestudentswerelinkedwithseverallocalbusinessesandtookpartinavarietyofactivitieswhichenabledthemtoseethevalueoftheirmodernlanguageskillsintheworkplace.ThankstoFalconGlobalaNorwich-basedsoftwarecompanysomeofourstudentswereabletositinonavideo-conferencewithanoilcompanyinKazakhstanandenjoyedaskingquestionsaboutenvironmentalissuesinRussian.Theyenjoyedtheexperienceimmenselyandgrewinconfidenceastheyrealisedthattheycouldcommunicateinanauthenticcontext.OthersvisitedPrimaryAssistandwitnessedatfirsthandtheinterpretingofphonecallsandmessagesnecessarytoevacuatethevictimsofskiingaccidentsinEuropeOverthelastthreeyearswehavebeeninvolvedinbusinessprojectswithHongKongmainlandChinaPolandFranceandSpainandallhavehelpedtoraisetheyoungpeoplesawarenessofhowlanguagesareusedonadaytodaybasisintheworldofwork.Anysuchlinkscanonlymotivatethemintheirstudiesandhighlighttheimportanceoflearningaforeignlanguageinour21stcenturyworld.
